October 31, 2020 -- Sean Connery, 90, a veteran actor best known for his playing the dashing British spy James Bond, died Friday night in the Bahamas, according to his son, Jason Connery.

Jason Connery said his father was surrounded by family. A cause of death was not given but his son said Sean Connery had been "unwell for some time," according to the BBC.

"We are all working at understanding this huge event as it only happened so recently, even though my dad has been unwell for some time," Jason Connery told the BBC. "A sad day for all who knew and loved my dad and a sad loss for all people around the world who enjoyed the wonderful gift he had as an actor."

Connery's publicist, Nancy Seltzer, told CNN that a private ceremony would be held "once the virus has ended."

Sean Connery was the first actor to portray James Bond, also known as 007. He appeared in seven spy thrillers, starting with "Dr. No" in 1962. He also appeared in the Bond movies "Goldfinger," "You Only Live Twice," "Diamonds Are Forever," "Thunderball," "From Russia With Love," and "Never Say Never Again."

Other actors played the spy in following films, but James Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said Connery defined the role.

"He was and shall always be remembered as the original James Bond whose indelible entrance into cinema history began when he announced those unforgettable words 'The name's Bond... James Bond' -- he revolutionized the world with his gritty and witty portrayal of the sexy and charismatic secret agent," the producers said, according to CNN.

"He is undoubtedly largely responsible for the success of the film series and we shall be forever grateful to him."

Connery won an Academy Award for best supporting actor in the 1987 film "The Untouchables." He also had standout roles in "The Hunt for Red October," "Highlander," and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade."

Connery grew up in Edinburgh, Scotland, and had his first major film appearance in 1957 British gangster film "No Road Back."
